What are Temperature Coils?

Coils for e-cigarettes can be made in different ways and with different materials. It is also possible to make your own coils! A special type of coil is the so-called "temperature coil". You can read about temperature coils and how you can make them yourself on this page.

Materials that are suitable for a temperature coil

If you have a mod with temperature control, you can use special coils that are made from one of these three materials:

  • Nickel / Ni200
  • Titanium / Ti
  • Stainless Steel / SS316

Standard resistance wires are made from kanthal, the resistance of the above materials is considerably lower. That is because the alloys are different so that the characteristics of the wires will deviate from standard kanthal resistance wire. The resistance of Nickel, Titanium and Stainless Steel is well below 1.0 Ohm. That basically means that your sub-ohm will fume, yet you cannot compare these coils with sub-ohm coils that are made of kanthal wire.

Create temperature coils

If you have already made coils with kanthal wire yourself, the process will seem familiar to you. In fact, the only difference is the material you work with, the technique is the same. Nickel, Titanium and Stainless Steel are softer and more flexible. The way of turning will therefore take some practice. It is important that you work accurately to achieve good results.

Create conditions for these coils:

  • You can only make open coils with these materials, there must be space between the windings of the wire.
  • You may not pre-heat the wires before wrapping them.
  • Make sure that there are no kinks in the wires when you wrap them and place them in the housing, as this can have a lot of impact on the resistance.

When you place the coil in the rebuildable atomizer you have to work carefully. The legs of the coil must be placed exactly under the screws of the atomizer. The coil must not be too tight, but not too loose either. With some rebuildable atomizers, the legs of the coils can be attached under the head of the screw. In that case it is wise to turn the leg a complete turn around the screw. When the coil is placed correctly, you should not pulse or fire it as you would with a Kanthal micro coil.

Wick in the coil

You now have the coil neatly in place, now it's time to place the wick in the right place. Also with the wick you have to work accurately again. If too much wick is used you will feel quite a bit of resistance, watch out because you can pull the coil out of the bandage. You will need a little less wick compared to the coils that are made from kanthal wire. You must be able to easily pull the wick through the coil.

Fumes with your own coils

Now you are ready to place the atomizer on your mod. Make sure that the atomizer including build is brought to room temperature, so you can measure the resistance. The evaporator can be placed on the mod. You must of course set the temperature to the correct setting. After reading the resistor you can fill or drip e-liquid tank. Now all you have to do is set the temperature and the vapor can begin! You cannot vaporize Nickel and Titanium coils on wattage and you cannot preheat them either.
